LVI Services, Chosen for McGuire Building Project, Brings Record of Safety in High-Rise Deconstruction
January 19, 2011, Seattle, WA - - LVI Services, Inc (LVI)., has begun pre-engineering activities in preparation for demolition of the 25-story McGuire Building located at Second Avenue and Wall Street in the Belltown neighborhood of Seattle. The 272-unit high-rise has been vacated and will be razed after studies revealed a pattern of corrosion in post-tension cables, rebar and concrete materials throughout the tower; defects resulting in unsafe conditions that have been deemed financially unfeasible to repair.
Relevant Experience
LVI has considerable and recent history of safe, successful high-rise dismantlement projects in urban settings. With an emphasis on worksite and community health and safety, LVI has emerged as the nation’s leading structural demolition provider.
LVI’s work on the McGuire begins as the company successfully completes the largest dismantlement project of its kind, the demolition of the 40-story Deutsche Bank Building in Lower Manhattan, New York City. The structure had been badly damaged by the collapse of 2 World Trade Center on 9/11 and a subsequent serious fire in 2007 (while being demolished by a different subcontractor). Following extensive decontamination activity concluded by LVI in September 2009, deconstruction has been accomplished over the past 15 months using the same floor-by-floor method proposed for the tower demolition at the McGuire.
In addition to the Deutsche Bank Building, LVI has a rich history of safety during successful deconstruction jobs coast-to-coast, including the 32-story steel frame St. Regis Hotel, in the Financial District of Century City, California. Completed in June, 2007 the St. Regis project was the largest high-rise demolition in Los Angeles’ history at the time.
LVI’s local partner for the McGuire deconstruction, RW Rhine, dismantled the 8-story 1st & Union Parking Garage in downtown Seattle using the same mass demolition method proposed for the McGuire garage. With sensitive adjacent historic buildings, RW Rhineengineers successfully separated common infrastructure to complete the work without damage to the remaining structures.
